Now it's time again: winter is just around the corner. But what happens to the garden pond in winter? We'll tell you how to make it winterproof.

Provide ice holes in the garden pond

When should you take care of ice holes?
If there is a pond in the garden, you should not miss it in winter. The water should remain in the pond - especially if there are fish or plants. If the garden pond is planted, you don't have to make ice holes in winter, since the pond will never completely freeze anyway. The plants act as straws that keep small ventilation channels clear.

However, if you have no plants in the pond, you should always make ice holes. One or two holes are sufficient. The reason for this is that the water continues to be enriched with sufficient oxygen even in winter and that additional fermentation gases can escape.

Make ice holes - but how?
To get holes in the ice, you can either buy special ice-free holders from specialist retailers or simply do it yourself with hot water. Pond heaters are not recommended because animals that live in the pond may wake up too early from the rigidity of the winter and thus weaken their health. So you have to lend a hand yourself and ensure that there are always enough holes in the ice layer.
