Temperatures are falling noticeably, the weather is getting harsher and for a few days now the frost in the night has been in control of large parts of Germany. Now, at the latest, it is high time to prepare for the cold season and make the balcony and terrace winter-proof.

Don't let your garden furniture hibernate without protection!

Not only plants now need the care of eager hobby gardeners so that they can keep their winter sheep in the cold season. The rest of the furnishing of the balcony and terrace also needs your attention, so that everything can be wintered undamaged until spring. Small parts such as wind turbines, lanterns, flower pots and plant decorations should now be carefully packed in the basement, tool shed or on the store. If you leave these small parts outside during winter, damage from frost and snow is inevitable. But even larger furnishings, i.e. your entire balcony or terrace furniture, now need an extra portion of care before they can be stowed away completely winter-proof.

Prepare balcony and terrace furniture for winter

Balcony and terrace furniture should not be exposed to the weather unprotected during the cold months, as otherwise they may not be very attractive in the spring and may even be damaged. Snow and rain can run in cracks and cause considerable damage when freezing.

Impregnate patio furniture

" Important "

To ensure that the care product can penetrate the wood or plastic sufficiently, store the furniture in a dry room for one to two days after processing.

It is therefore important to carefully impregnate the balcony and terrace furniture again before the first onset of winter. Care products for wooden and plastic furniture are available in hardware stores such as Bauhaus or OBI, which can be used to treat individual pieces of furniture. Ideally, start impregnating in autumn when the temperatures are not too bad in the basement.

Plastic covers for garden furniture protect outdoors

Don't let your garden furniture hibernate without protection! If you have no place to keep your balcony and terrace furniture winter-proof, you should protect them from frost and moisture with plastic covers. In this way, the furniture remains protected from rain, snow and wind and survives the winter unscathed. Plastic sleeves in different sizes are also available in hardware stores or on the Internet, for example at Amazon or eBay.

The safest way of hibernating balcony and terrace furniture is of course in protected rooms such as in the basement or in the garden shed. If there is enough storage space, placing the furniture under it is still the best protection against frost.

Remove dirt from pipes and gutters

When the days get wet and cold, functional drainage channels on the balcony and terrace are very important so that rainwater and snow cannot build up. It is therefore advisable to clean the pipes thoroughly in autumn. Use a shovel and a hand brush to remove leaves and slush from the gutters. So the water can flow off again unhindered.

Have the balcony and terrace winterized by a specialist

Anyone who is not sufficiently familiar with the necessary work and suspects particularly heavy or stuck dirt should, as a precaution, hire a specialist to clean the drain pipes and gutters. In the yellow pages or on online portals such as, there is a large selection of regional providers who understand cleaning work and make the inflows and outflows of balconies and patios suitable for winter with a few simple steps. Falling leaves and slush should be removed from the floor of the balcony and terrace regularly in autumn and winter, otherwise there is a considerable risk of slipping in wet and frosty conditions. With a rake or a strong broom, dirt can be removed in a few minutes.

When autumn and winter have a firm grip on Germany, it is high time to prepare the outdoor area for the cold season. Balcony and terrace need a little extra care during these weeks so that plants, furniture and other furnishings survive the winter unscathed. In spring, the patio becomes a feel-good oasis in just a few simple steps.
