For more bathing pleasure and also for hygienic reasons, it is important that you clean your pool. Here is a guide and important tips.

Cleaning the pool is not difficult

Who doesn't dream of being able to take a few refreshing laps in your own pool in your garden in summer or on warm spring days? However, most are not aware that this also means a lot of work, which of course can be done wrong.

Only a clean, well-kept and clean pool is a place to relax and retreat - but the environment ensures that you always have to do something. To prevent algae, for example, you have to use special chemical products such as on copper sulfate for swimming pools.

In this post, we would like to go into more detail on how to properly clean your pool. We go into basic cleaning in spring, daily cleaning and pool cleaning in winter.

Regular cleaning with a pump

The easiest way is to use a powerful pump and a mix of light chemical agents to ensure that the water in the pool always remains clean and clean. The filter ensures that even larger particles of dirt, as well as leaves and undergrowth, simply flow away. It is important that the pump is set with regard to the volume of the pool and the necessary filter performance. By the way, a basic distinction is made between two filter types:

Sand Filters:

A sand filter filters with gentle grains of sand with a very low grain size of around 0.6 millimeters. Let this filter rewind for about five minutes every week to rinse off all dirt particles. The sight glass of the pump provides information on the progress of cleaning in the case of stubborn dirt.

Cartridge Filters:

A cartridge filter, however, is the more cost-effective replacement. Here you either replace the cartridge or spray the filter with the garden hose. It is important, however, that you do not use chemical agents because you can damage the filter with so-called flocculants.

" Tip:

Experts advise that the complete amount of water should be completely circulated at least three times a day - this corresponds to a filter runtime of around 8 hours, which is the standard performance. If there is still some dirt despite these measures, you can use a floor cleaner to vacuum the floor and use it to clean it. And leaves and small animals that collect on the water surface can be quickly removed with a landing net.

Basic cleaning in spring

Despite the use of a pump, you should always thoroughly clean your pool at the beginning of the bathing season. For this you need:

  • landing net
  • Broom / whisk broom
  • submersible pump
  • garden hose
  • possibly a pool edge cleaner

Step 1 - remove leaves / vermin:

First remove everything that floats on the water surface with a net. This is done relatively quickly, so you can quickly move on to the second step.

Step 2 - drain water:

For the next step you need a submersible pump. If you do not have such a pump, then you should ask the garden center whether you can borrow one there. Use this to pump out all the water in the pool.

This process takes quite a while. In the meantime, however, you can already clean the pool surround, i.e. if available, sweep the tiles, remove weeds, etc.

Step 3 - clean the pool:

If the pool is pumped empty, it is best to let the pool edge dry. This will make it much easier for you to sweep up the coarsest dirt that has collected on the edge and on the floor.

" Tip:

If a film of grease has formed on the edge of the pool, then it is best to clean it with a special pool edge cleaner (available from Amazon, for example). Then rinse everything well with the garden hose.

Step 4 - fill the pool with water:

If your pool is sparkling clean from the inside, you can fill it up with water again.

" Tip:

It is best to add a chlorine tablet (also available from Amazon). This prevents the water from becoming cloudy quickly.

Keep the pool clean in winter

Even in the cold season, a pool needs adequate maintenance, especially if you want to keep the basic cleaning as low as possible at the beginning of spring. It is important that you:

  • choose a pH between 7.0 and 7.4.
  • Carry out a so-called shock chlorination, as this will permanently remove dirt particles.
  • with regard to the water level, make sure that it falls under the nozzles and the skimmer.

All pipes and the pump must be completely drained, otherwise you risk that they will have to be replaced expensive after a few years.
